Liam Hemsworth is grateful he was at home in Malibu, California when last year’s wildfires ripped through the town, because his pets would have perished if he wasn’t there to evacuate the place.
The Hunger Games star and his wife Miley Cyrus lost their home to the blaze, but they were able to save their dogs, cats, pigs, and horses thanks to a filming break on his project in Alabama.
“(It was) a crazy thing to go through…,” he told Live with Kelly and Ryan on Friday. “I came back on Wednesday night and Thursday night my brother told me there were fires in Agoura Hills, which is about 20 minutes away from Malibu… We didn’t think too much about it on Thursday, but Friday morning my brother called me and he said, ‘Hey, get ready, they’re going to issue a mandatory evacuation’.
“So I went to the gas station, filled up my truck, came back to the house, started loading up all our animals…”
The process went smoothly until it was time for Liam to get the couple’s pet pigs to safety in large crates.
“The pigs are the hardest thing, they weigh about 300 pounds each and I had to force them into these crates, which took about 45 minutes,” he said. “They hate it, they’re squealing and screaming and as I’m doing it, the smoke is getting closer and closer and coming over the back of this mountain and eventually we get the pigs in the crate, lift them on the back of the truck, get the dogs in… and then drive out of there.
“I think it was about 4am (the following morning) that we found out that we lost the house,” he added. “The stables all burned down, so if we had left the animals, they definitely wouldn’t have made it.”
Robin Thicke also lost his Malibu compound in the blaze, but like Miley and Liam, he’s hoping to rebuild from the ashes.
