Members of America’s Congressional Black Caucus have vowed to fight to free rapper A$Ap Rocky from a Swedish jail.
The Praise The Lord rapper, real name Rakim Mayers, and members of his entourage were arrested on suspicion of assault in Stockholm on 2 July after an alleged street brawl following a performance in the city. He has been held in a Swedish prison, pending a decision from prosecutors on whether to pursue charges.
African-American lawmakers are now fighting to free the star, Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York tells TMZ.com.
“The situation with A$AP Rocky is unfortunate, it’s outrageous, it needs to be addressed,” he said. “You can expect that members of Congress, particularly those of use who are part of the Congressional Black Caucus, are going to continue to weigh in forcefully until A$AP Rocky is free.”
Caucus members include U.S. Senators and presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Corey Booker, as well as 51 U.S. Representatives.
Members will stand on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building on Wednesday to demand the musician’s release.
They join more than 500,000 people who have signed a petition calling for Rocky to be set free as well as stars including Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, Michael Jordan and Justin Bieber, who have all spoken out on his behalf.
Fellow rapper Tyga also canceled a show in Sweden in solidarity and Tyler, The Creator has vowed not to play in the Scandinavian country again.
Swedish officials have denied reports the hip-hop star has been kept in inhumane conditions while in custody.
Representatives of the U.S. State Department have urged the country’s authorities to treat him with “respect”.
